MARK SHIELDS (MODERATOR): Bob, the chiefs of police of all the major cities are for this [extending the assault weapons ban].

Double whammy for Bob. He manages to insult first responders who keep our country safe by saying that they are “for anything the Democrats want,” as if they are partisan hacks. He also manages to misstate the reason they support the assault weapons ban. Before his career outing covert agents as a stooge for the administration, Novak has had a long history of boldly misstating simple facts like this one. Maybe he never gets called on it because no one wants to risk getting into a conversation with the arrogant jerk.

MYTHS AND ASSUMPTIONS: REALITY
Police support the assault weapons ban only because they are Democrats.
Police support the assault weapons ban because these dangerous weapons pose a serious threat to public safety
Unions always support Democrats. While the International Brotherhood of Police Officers has endorsed Kerry, the Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed Bush. Both have endorsed renewal of the ban.
The assault weapons ban is a primarily political issue, and not one of public safety. This claim is rendered useless by the fact that even the Bush endorsed Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed renewing the ban
Do citizens have an obligation to cheer the decisions of their government in a time of war, right or wrong? In a democracy, it is the right and responsibility of citizens to speak their minds. If this rule is suspended in war time, than we could never hold any leader accountable the moment he places troops in harm's way. Yet, it is precisely during such times, when a President's decisions place lives of Americans and others in the balance, that citizens must be most vigilant.
