The ACLU Confronts the Military

Talking Points Memo

December 16, 2004

But there is no doubt in the mind of "Talking Points" that the ACLU's primary intent was not information flow, but an effort to smear the military and the Bush administration.

Abuse happens in every war. That's a fact. Clear thinking Americans can't condone it, but in this case, the military seems to be doing its job. The abusers are being held accountable.

But here's something you might not know. Guess who is the ACLU's new best friend? Hey, George Soros (search), this bud's for you. The radical billionaire has given close to $4 million to the ACLU recently.—That'll buy a lot of stuff.

Demonizing your opponents and lying is the hallmark of proto-facists, bullies, sex-offenders, and oxycontin addicts. This is the swollen, blotchy face of the modern American Right Wing blatherati.

"Abuse happens in every war. That's a fact. Clear thinking Americans can't condone it, but in this case, the military seems to be doing its job. The abusers are being held accountable."

If it is in fact the military’s job to violate the Geneva Conventions repeatedly, then yes, it is doing its job. Prisoner and detainee abuse in Iraq and at Guantanamo have been systematic, and not just a few isolated incidents.

From the LA Times 12/20/04: “Earlier this month, the ACLU released records in which FBI agents complained about prisoner abuse in 2002. The new records show FBI complaints have continued through 2004.” This was reported in the NY Times 12/7/04 as well. The Washington Times noted that the ACLU has received 9,000 documents on internal investigations by agencies about prisoner abuse—not including the CIA, which has refused to comply.

Reports from DIA Agents confirmed continued abuse. (New York Times, 12/8/04). Clearly, not everyone involved is being held accountable.

"Guess who is the ACLU's new best friend? Hey, George Soros, this bud's for you. The radical billionaire has given close to $4 million to the ACLU recently.—That'll buy a lot of stuff.
So there's no question that the ACLU has changed its mission from protecting the expression rights of Americans to attacking traditional and conservative enterprises."
Check CapitalResearchCenter for a listing of who paid what to the ACLU—Open Society Institute isn’t even the top donor (that’s Soros’ foundation). There is absolutely no evidence of the $4 million number online unless Bill is adding up the last six or so years when he says “recently”. Even the Capital Research Center's Foundation Watch, which has been criticized by the Center for Media and Democracy as biased, does not make the outrageous claim of $4 million in donations.
"Attacking Christianity, embarrassing the military, accusing the elected government of abuse and promoting a radical agenda are not hallmarks of a benign operation."

Actually the ACLU defends religious freedom. They also support the separation of church and state to ensure the ongoing protection of individual religious liberty.

If defending the liberties of Americans constitutes a "radical agenda" then Wild Bill should take another look at the Bill of Rights and other various writings of our founding fathers.

Demonizing those that criticize this administration is what scares us. This is the Orwellian idea that an “elected” government can’t be accused of abuse, especially when that government has condoned supra-legal mechanisms to engage in widespread abuse and torture.

A few points to burst Bill's patriotic libido. The ACLU defends American liberties. If this is extreme, than count us in as extremists. You'd also have to count the Bill of Rights and the Founding Fathers in this categorization. The ACLU also defends religious liberty. Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers believed in the separation of church and state, well, religiously. This is because they didn't want any one religion imposed on society, and especially because they did not want the religious doctrine of any particular faction imposed on society. We thank God that they had the insight to codify this. In fact, we'd all be better off with a lot more ACLU's and a lot less Falwell's, Robertson's and O'Reilly's.

The ACLU shouldn't be suing the Pentagon to get to the bottom of this administrations unholy policy of torturing prisoners, the Congress and a special prosecutor should. Absent that, once again, thank God that the ACLU is.
