Swallowing Right Wing Intolerance
“ Equality can be overrated. Flat-chested women have no business working at Hooters -- which with A-cup waitresses is basically just Denny's. Young children shouldn't hold down 9-to-5 jobs. Children who took the short bus to school and had to wear those special platform shoes back when they weren't hip shouldn't be allowed to practice neurosurgery, even though denying them the opportunity to do so could be considered discriminatory on the basis of mental disability.

If a bus pulls up to the curb and the driver is clutching the steering wheel with his teeth because he doesn't have any hands or feet then -- physical discrimination or not -- I'm walking. And I don't want Mr. Itchy-Scratchy who has a visibly bad case of dandruff flaking out all over my steak at a five-star restaurant.
Yet the same kind of perversions of that are used to turn traditional notions of equality on their head are being used to leverage attacks on the traditional definition of marriage through the court system in both Canada and the United States.”
Mardsen’s chummy, self-assured tone masks a number of falsified statements and a clearly bigoted attitude. She alternates between trying to speak on behalf of homosexuals—making liberals and socialists the bad guys—and openly discriminating against homosexuals by claiming that their lifestyles are harmful to societies and children, and are abnormal “social engineering” experiments. Her statistical and factual claims have no merit while her rhetoric is ignorant, outdated conservative ranting against the supposed menace of socialism.

| "Discriminating against gays when it comes to marriage is also a wise move. Various studies have shown that children from non-traditional families -- lacking either a mother's or a father's influence -- are more likely to attempt suicide, drop out of high school, commit crime, run away from home, or become teen parents." | “There
have been countless studies that have disproved the hypothesis
that children are negatively effected by gay and lesbian parenting.
Almost all of the studies prove in one way or another that the sexual
orientation of the parent has no effect upon the sexual identity,
personal development and social development of their offspring.
The home environments that gay and lesbian parents provide is just
as healthy as that of heterosexual parents.” “Studies on the three aspects of sexual identity including gender identity, gender-role behavior and sexual orientation have failed to reveal any differences in the development of children as a result of their parents’ sexual preference” Also, “at least 34 percent of adoptive children enter non-traditional families. According to the 2000 census, fewer than 24 percent of homes are composed of a husband, wife, and child under the age of 18. The type of family unit that opponents to gay adoption cite is becoming less of a norm as the number of non-traditional families continues to rise.” |
| "Gays comprise just a few percent of the total population -- certainly not the "1 in 10" figure claimed as a result of the Kinsey studies -- and, for the most part, they are not clamoring to have their relationships legitimized through an institution grounded in religions that do, and always will, consider their lifestyle to be sinful." | The author ignores
that her argument is not about legitimizing gay marriage before
religious institutions, but rather using government to ban it, regardless
of what any religious institution think. The U.S. Census Bureau clearly shows that 10% of U.S. households are same-sex. Also see this Urban Institute study. |
| "It's hard to imagine gays wanting to sell out to an institution that has rebuffed them, just for the sake of cheap car insurance, a little time off and a few compo bucks." | Mardsen treats
this far too flippantly. “When a gay, lesbian or bisexual
senior dies, his or her surviving partner faces a financial loss
that can amount to tens of thousands of dollars because the couple
cannot be recognized as legally married in the United States. Despite
having paid taxes their whole lifetime at the same rate as other
Americans, surviving partners are: Denied the Social Security survivor benefits that are made available to all married couples; Heavily taxed on any retirement plan — 401(k) or IRA — they inherit from their partners, although married spouses can inherit these plans tax-free; and Charged an estate tax on the inheritance of a home, even if it was jointly owned — a tax that would not apply to married spouses.” |
