What they're saying this week ...

July 18 , 2005

The war in Iraq is an excuse for radicalism, not its cause; just as the war in Vietnam was an excuse for American radicals to conduct a war against America they already had it in their hearts to fight.

-- David Horowitz, “The London Bombings”, newsmax.com, July 12, 2005

The future terrorist is comforted by the fact that his or her fellow Muslims in the West use their bodies as an advertising space for their beliefs. In many Western cities, this comes in the form of al Qaeda-style beards and long shirts (qamis) for men and jet-black hijab (headgear) for women. (Not long ago, I saw a baby girl in a carriage wearing that prop of visual terrorism.)

-- Amir Taheri, “Time to hit the suicide factories,”NY Post, July 8, 2005

“The usual suspects, led by the New York Times, blamed it all on Bush and Blair and their perverse willingness to fight back against our murderers.”

-- Michael Ledeen, "Safer at Safari," National Review Online, 07/11/05

“But the current Democratic furor and obstructionism are unprecedented and obviously self-defeating.”

-- Victor Davis Hanson, "Who are the reactionaries?" Washington Times, 7/9/2005

John's sister, Alice, just purchased Asher B. Durand's "Kindred Spirits" (1849), which depicts Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School of painting, with the poet William Cullen Bryant. The two stand along a rock ledge, a tree arching above, a river tumbling below and a hilly vista stretching to the horizon. It's as if, looking out on the scene and imagining America's great potential, they can almost see a Wal-Mart rising in the distance.

It has become trendy in certain circles to speak of "No More Srebrenicas," as well as "No More Rwandas" and "No More Darfurs." If these people really believe the slogan, then the policy to make it work already has a name. It's called the Bush Doctrine.

--Editorial, “Lessons of Srebrenica,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/11/05

“Today everyone knows that when Ted Kennedy opens his mouth, slander pours out.  He could accuse a nominee of killing Mary Jo Kopechne and people would just shrug and say, ‘That’s our Teddy.’”

--  James Taranto, The Wall Street Journal, 07/11/05
