Such assurance has not satisfied those zealots devoted to purging Christianity from the public square. Some of them are so mindlessly committed to privatizing religion they don't even believe members of the legislative or executive branches should permit their religious beliefs to inform their policy views. But the idea that a faithful Catholic Supreme Court justice might defer to the pope ahead of the Constitution drives them mad.
Every August, there are some Americans who insist on wringing their hands over the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, so it was perhaps inevitable that such people would have an orgy of wallowing in guilt on the 60th anniversary of that tragic day.

As a March AP-Ipsos poll found, Americans are now evenly divided over the dropping of the atomic bombs. In 1945, 85 percent of Americans approved the use of atomic weapons. Now, only 47 percent approve, while 45 percent disapprove. These statistics are troubling…

What interests the champions of all the major progressive strains-the radical naturalists, the Marxists, the multiculturalists, and the sexual hedonists-is the destruction of traditional Judaeo-Christian culture. This is the tie that binds. Traditionalists are all that stand in the way of their creating their own heavens on earth.
I think Whittaker Chambers said it best. For him the difference between the "Communist" on the one hand and "those miscellaneous socialists, liberals, follow travelers, unclassified progressives, and men of good will" on the other was one of commitment, not one of vision. The vision they all shared was of a man-centered world, one in which God was either dead or irrelevant. Somewhere during their childhoods, someone told them they were smarter than God, and they bought it.

Progressives killed 100 million people in the 20th Century, in peacetime; the societies they constructed created poverty on unimaginable scale; their economic systems didn't work. Has any of this caused them a second thought? Or look at the current war to overthrow a monster in Iraq and give ordinary Iraqis the freedom to vote. So-called Progressives have done everything they could to save Saddam's bacon and prevent Iraqis from achieving even minimal freedoms. The same people who used to get enraged when the United States supported dictators are now attacking Bush for overthrowing one. Why? Because in their melodrama America is the global oppressor, the Great Satan, and therefore, can never do anything right. That's why you can only understand Progressivism as a religion.

The real obstacle to the enlistment of new recruits is the desecration of the image of military service by the Fifth Column -- the enemy within. The American anti-war movement, led by neo-McGovernites such as DNC Chairman Howard Dean and lawmakers Kucinich, Kennedy and Kerry has not been able to find legs. So rather than target "war," these malcontents have rallied their minions to undertake counter-recruitment measures, figuring that a nation can't fight a war without warriors.
