It's fatwah time in South America

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it," said Robertson Monday. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." (Watch Robertson's comments).

-- Pat Robertson quoted on CNN

The cravenness of the Christian Right knows no bounds. Pat Robertson issues a fatwah suggesting the assassination of Hugo Chavez (hey, what would Jesus do?!) and only one conservative Christian organization issues a denunciation. Then, as soon he apologizes in the most pompous and offensive fashion by comparing himself to a German clergyman who tried to assassinate Hitler, they applaud.

“Making a public apology is always a difficult and humbling experience, but Pat Robertson endured the humiliation and did the right thing," said the Reverend Rob Schenck.

-- National Clergy Council, “Robertson Commended on Apology”, 08/25/05

For some reason we can’t help being suspicious that Rev. Schenck didn’t let President Clinton off the hook that easily when he apologized for his brief affair with Monica Lewinsky. But hey, getting a blow job is much worse than destabilizing world politics by calling for unlawful murder right?

Meanwhile the Orwellian named Campaign for Children and Families attempts to destroy the legal protections for children and families—when the parents are gay.  They announced that they were:

shocked and saddened by today’s ruling by the California Supreme Court abolishing the traditional definition of parenthood.

Today’s trio of decisions by the state high court means parenting, custody and child support laws now apply to homosexual couples that used artificial insemination to conceive. The Supreme Court “reinterpreted” parenting and egg donation laws to fully equate two women with a mother and a father...

“Now that the definition of parenthood has been thrown out the window, what’s next?” asked Thomasson. “Redefining marriage to be two men or two women? This ruling gives Californians more reason than ever to support VoteYesMarriage.com to protect marriage as the basic family unit in the California Constitution. While the Voters’ Right to Protect Marriage Initiative will not affect adoption and child custody laws, it will at least establish that marriage rights are for one man and one woman, as it was, is, and always should be.”

-- Campaign for Children and Families, “Despite Junk Science and Frustrating Rulings, Children Still Need a Mother and a Father”, 08/23/05

Much like the Christian Right’s willful rejection of the last 100 years of evolutionary biology, they seem to reject any recent advances in reproductive medicine. So they think that lesbian couples are unnatural?  Would they say the same thing about chemotherapy if they get cancer?  And would they have the nerve to impose that deadly callousness on the rest of us?
